Glitch Art Tutorial by Gloomy-Haruka Glitch Art Tutorial by Gloomy-Haruka
WARNING HUGE IMAGE!!!!
Hey there guys!
I made this almost the second I discovered how to make glitch art! There are different ways, but this seems to be the easiest so far.
I made this during the summer while I had no internet. I do hope there arenít any mistakes and itís clear enough for everyone!; 0 ; If anything is still not clear, please do PM me and Iíll reply to you as soon as I see your message!
There are also different ways on how to make glitch art. Recently, Iíve discovered a new way of making glitch art with a program called ďAudacityĒ.
There are a ton of people out there that have made tuts on how to make glitch art using Audacity. But it never hurts to have more! So be sure Iíll be making a new tut very soon!^ 0 ^

This doesn't work for me, everything just tells me it's an unsupported fle format, no matter what I save it as.

In true glitch fashion, this froze my wordpad XD

Unfortunately, something with my computer won't let me do this (I got wordpad to play nice after a while, so it's not that). Dunno if it's Windows 7 or Photoshop CS5, but it never lets me open it afterwards (yay for saving multiple originals, I guess?)

I'll keep fiddling with it, see if I can get it to work. Glitches are fascinating things!

If I do this, will it harm or corrupt my PC in any way? Or give it a virus? I just want to be sure. Emergency Tard

It can't give you a virus per se, but it can damage your computer.
We're supposed to make glitch art for an assignment in one of my classes and it actually ended up crashing one of my classmate's computers. According to other students, the file can confuse your computer into thinking there's a command in there, corrupting files, potentially irreparably.

Why am I not Surprised? Weird that it changes the image by just saving it...

Sorry for the late reply!
And yeah, sometimes the file become too corrupted and can't open. It happens sometimes. But I guess it's normal, we are after all corrupting the file.xD lol
But yeah, when that happens, I just save the original image in anther format. And remember, don't save them in PNG/GIF/JPG/etc.
They will become too broken.
Make sure it's a bmp, tif or photoshop raw file.

Also, sometimes I can't open it in Photoshop properly so I just open it in MS Paint and save it as a PNG and then open it in Photoshop.

Sorry if I didn't help and for the late reply!; A ;
I hope you've found the problem though! Have fun glitching!

The glitch isn't actually randomly created, btw - it's something about the way wordpad shuffles data when it opens the image file as text. That's why it's the same no matter what computer you use!
I imagine entering a random character somewhere before you save might do something interesting... hmm...

Ahhh, I had no idea! But it makes total sense! Thanks for pointing that out!! u u u
And hmmm, perhaps it might. Though, try to avoid the first chunk of the text however. Or you might damage the frame, and if that happens, the image wont be viewable or openable.; A ;
Try the middle. I heard that adding huge, random chunks or text in the middle might do something.~ But I haven't tried it out yet. If you try it, or have tried it, let me know the results.:3

Hm. Didn't work for me—I couldn't open the bmp after I re-saved it. I notice that my version of Wordpad is higher (as I'm on Windows 7). Maybe that's the issue? I'll try it with TextPad, I guess....

Hmmm, that is odd. Though, it does happen sometimes that the file becomes so damaged, that you can no longer open it. It happens sometimes (sadly). u . u Try saving your image in .tiff format and try doing a new glitch again.
And I don't think that's the issue. It just happens sometimes. Happens to me as well.xD
Hmmm, I never tried with the Notepad/Textpad. Let me know if it worked! c:

After getting the old version of Wordpad, it seems that there are simply some bmps that break and some that don't, so unless I restore the default Vista/7 Wordpad, I'll never know if that was really a problem... Interestingly, I've had a bmp break in wp, then taken it through Audacity and have it work in wp. Not all the time, though.

So far I've found no correlation among the files that work or among the ones that don't. Not to shamelessly pimp my Tumblr, but I'll be posting a few systematic experiments with various glitch processes here: [link]

(Sorry for the late reply)
And hmmm that is interesting. (I usually just open up my glitch in Paint first if I can't open it on Photoshop and save it as a PNG image and then open it up on Photoshop.xD)
But yeah, maybe using the old wordpad is better.
And those seem really neat! Actually, if you don't mind, can you tell me different ways on how to glitch?:3
I only know how to do it through Audacity and Wordpad.
Linking me up to a few tuts would be great too! (I use Window's XP by the way.~)
Ahhh thanks so much though!; A ; And sorry if I'm asking a lot.xD
Also, I'm so following you on Tumblr now! You've got some cool stuff mate.~

Different ways to glitch...hmm. I've only experimented with those two as well. I've come across a few other methods, though. Cachemashing looked really interesting, if you can get a hold of a v6 or earlier Photoshop: [link]

Datamoshing is for video, but you could start with a still image and use any random video to mess it up: [link]

This guy posts about a lot of techniques and stuff: [link]

You can also simply find a hex editor and start messing with data manually (similar to the WordPad effect, but you actually have to alter the "text"). I'd recommend one, but I haven't gotten around to looking for one.

And this isn't exactly glitching, but you can use the slitscanner.js bookmarklet to scan YouTube and Vimeo vids: [link]

That's all I got. Happy glitching

Figured it out: If you're using Win7 and have the new Wordpad, follow this tut to get the old one: [link]
